So this Saturday, Grant shot his deer. It was HUGE!
He went hunting with his good friend Lance in the evening. They had been out a few times before, but Grant hadn't shot anything yet. After he shot it, they brought it back to Lance's house and hung in the garage.

Sunday, after church, we went to see it. The boys thought it was SO cool that Dad shot a deer. They especially loved it when the feet were cut off and Grant showed them that there was a tendon you could pull in the leg that would make the hoof "wave" at you. Zadyn, was not impressed. She thought it was a monster and wouldn't have anything to do with it. Grant de-boned the deer and we brought the meat home. Yesterday, I spent the majority of the day cleaning the meat and trimming the fat. We got about 12 good sized roasts, 20 steaks and A LOT of stew meat. We are going to wrap it all and get it in the freezer tonight. Grant and Lance went out elk hunting yesterday, but came back empty handed. He doesn't know if they'll make it out again before the hunting season closes. Avery said he can't wait until he is old enough to go hunting with Dad, then he will be Avery Deer-Killer!
Edited to add the final count: 30 pounds of meat!
12 Roasts
20 Steaks
16 (~1/2 lb) packages of stew meat
***and we learned that wrapping in freezer paper is not all that it's cracked up to be***

You are brave to clean and trim the meat. The only way we would ever get you kids to eat deer meat when someone gave us some was to have Dad cook it and NOT tell you or ME when he cooked it or that it WAS deer meat! My brothers hunted all the time and I remember them cleaning their deer sometimes in the garage. It really grossed me out, that's probably why I never liked it. Check with Dad if you need some "camouflage" recipes!
I so cry.
At work we show the hunting DVD for the month and there is this 2 minute clip of an elk dying after it was shot. I cried the first time I watched it. Let's just hope your deer was dead on impact
Too true on the meat story from your mother. I continue to cook 'exotic' for my wife and family. I remember the time we bbqed 'stake' on the grill. Mom thought it was great beef; I thought so to -- for deer stakes!
Next time we are up you will have to fix some (just dont tell Mom, or Collette for that matter.)
Gross, Gross, Gross! My mom and dad always tried to hide that taste from me but were never very good, I can smell it when it cooks and the taste is always tooo gamey for me. But good for you guys if you like it!!!
We had green pepper stake tonight and it was great. This is the first whitetail I have ever had and it is not gamey like mule deer. This thing has been fed on hay its entire life. Dont' worry Collete, it didn't take it long. It jumped 4 feet in the air when it was shot and only ran 20 yards before collapsing. I think that is pretty quick.
The photo of the hanging deer brings back memories of Grandpa Gauger and the brothers. Not only can I picture it in my mind, I can recall the smell. Thanks, Grant, for making it even more real.
