Yesturday, the kids and I picked peppers and cucumbers from our garden. I cut the peppers up to freeze and filled a gallon zip lock! We use them on pizza, in green pepper steak and other things throughout the winter.
Then, when Grant got home, after dinner, we turned the cucumbers into pickles. We used a pre-packaged seasoning mix and water bathed them to seal them. It was really easy, but the house smelled like pickles all night. We were able to get 7 pints of pickles with twice as many cucumbers in the garden that will be ready to pick this weekend.
We are still waiting for our tomatoes to turn red so we can make our salsa and "jar" it. The kids are really excited. I was hoping to make some of Dad's infamous pickled beans, but alas, the mole in the garden really likes the bean plants and we only have 5 bean plants left. I can't get any beans off them after the kids have their share!

Is it really canning if you use a jar?

Wow - your list of talents just keep getting longer. Grandma Gauger was always very careful to have the bottled fruit or vegetables look neat. You have followed in her footsteps .
Looks great! I am still getting up the courage to tackle the bean issue. We have 8-10 lbs in the fridge now - thats about 14 pints of pickled beans.
My mouth is watering as I see those pictures. I know how much your family all love pickles! As Dad says, we are trying to get the ump up to do some pickled beans. Maybe after the dedication and schedules slow down, if they ever do!
Your canning reminds me of Grandma Gauger. How do you have time to do it will all the little ones? Way to go!!! XOXO
